KUALA KANGSAR: With all the privileges provided, there is no reason for students of the elite Malay College Kuala Kangar (MCKK) not to achieve the best results and remain at the top of the academic field, said the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, here.

"If MCKK fails, it will be a huge disappointment."

The sultan pointed out that the Education Ministry had recognised MCKK as one of the high performing schools which recruited not only the cream of the crop but whose teachers were also the best.

"The privileges enjoyed by MCKK exceed most other schools in the country. The board of governors, too, are renowned personalities and the Raja Muda (Raja Dr Nazrin Shah) is the chairman," he said in his speech at MCKK's Prize Presentation and Speech Day, here yesterday.

Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom, MCKK principal Mohd Rauhi Mohd Isa and MCKK Old Boys Association members.

He said for the school to remain at the top, it needed the commitment of all parties, including the students, teachers, administrators, staff and parents.

He reminded those involved in the selection process to identify students based not only on their academic excellence but also on other aspects, such as sports, arts, leadership qualities, writing skills and religious understanding.

The sultan advised the students to be thankful that they had all those facilities as there were 72 million children worldwide who did not have the privilege of attending school.

Meanwhile, National Heritage Department commissioner Professor Datuk Zurina Abdul Majid presented a heritage plaque from one of MCKK's buildings, known as "Big School", to Raja Nazrin.

"Big School" is one of the earliest buildings in MCKK, constructed in 1909. It was previously used as a classroom but has now been converted to a students' hostel.

The grand structure was gazetted as a national heritage in March last year.
